Culpeper writes on Trochisci Hedychroi

Nicholas Culpeper’s Pharmacopoeia Londinensis, or, The London Dispensatory (1649, rev. 1653) was his attempt to set right the wrong he called ‘Ignorance in Physick.’ Culpeper did this by translating into plain English the exclusive-to-apothecaries and Latin-based London Pharmacopoiea, and publishing the resulting book cheaply for the common man.

Among the apothecaries’ recipes he reveals are a number for troches or pastilles, including Trochisci Hedychroi (his p148). As a sample of the compound treacles it is interesting to see how complex, expensive and hard to source this actually was.

The ingredients Culpeper lists are: Aspalathus, or yellow sandalwood; Mastich leaves; Asarabacca; Rhupontick; Castus; Calamus Aromaticus; Aloes; Cinnamon; Squinancth; Opobalsamum or Oyl of Nutmegs; Cassia Lignea, Indian Leaf or Mace; Indian Spicknard; Mirrh; Saffron; Amomus or Cardamoms the less; Mastich; and Canary wine.
